Why Zhangjiajie?

When James Cameron needed inspiration for Avatar’s floating mountains, he came here. Zhangjiajie’s quartz-sandstone pillars rise 200+ meters from the forest floor, shrouded in mist. The glass bridge over Grand Canyon, the cliff walkway at Tianmen Mountain, the cable car through the arch — this is China’s adventure capital. 2024 saw 160x growth in international visitors. It’s finally on the Western radar.

张家界国家森林公园 — Avatar mountains

This is the main event: 3,000+ quartz pillars, some 200m tall. The “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” (formerly South Sky Pillar) is the star. Take the Bailong Elevator (world’s tallest outdoor lift, 326m) up, walk the trails, take the cable car down. Plan a full day. The Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain areas are must-sees.

Tianmen Mountain & Glass Walkway

天门山 — Heaven’s Gate

Take the world’s longest cable car (7.5km, 30 minutes) up through Tianmen Cave — a natural arch in the mountain. The cliff-hanging glass walkway isn’t for the faint-hearted. The 999 Steps to Heaven’s Gate are a pilgrimage. In winter, it’s snow-covered and magical.

Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge

张家界大峡谷玻璃桥 — 430m long, 300m high

The world’s longest and highest glass bridge spans Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. It’s 430 meters long and 300 meters above ground. The glass panels are reinforced, but your brain won’t believe it. There’s a bungee jump for the truly insane. Book ahead — it often sells out.
