Why Shanghai?

Shanghai is China’s answer to New York — a city that never sleeps, where Art Deco mansions from the 1920s face off against the world’s second-tallest building. The Bund’s colonial waterfront could be in London; cross the river and you’re in Blade Runner territory.

For American travelers, Shanghai is often the entry point to China — best international flights, most English-friendly. But it’s also a destination: world-class museums, legendary dumplings, hidden jazz bars, and an energy that makes 24 million people feel like they’re all having a very good time.

🇩🇪 Auf Deutsch lesen

Shanghai ist Chinas Antwort auf New York — eine Stadt, die nie schläft, wo Art-Déco-Villen aus den 1920ern der zweithöchsten Gebäude der Welt gegenüberstehen.

Must-See Attractions

#1 Must-See

The Bund (Waitan)

外滩 Wàitān

This mile-long waterfront is Shanghai’s postcard. On one side: 52 buildings from the 1920s-30s, when Shanghai was “Paris of the East.” On the other: Pudong’s sci-fi skyline. Come at sunset, watch the lights come on, and understand why this is one of the world’s great urban views.

⏱️ Time: 2-3 hours
🎫 Cost: Free
🌅 Best: Sunset to night
📸 Photo: Near Nanjing Road

Ming Dynasty

Yu Garden

豫园 Yùyúan

Built in 1559, this 5-acre classical Chinese garden is an oasis of tranquility. Rockeries, pavilions, ponds with golden carp, and the famous “Exquisite Jade Rock.” The surrounding bazaar is touristy but fun — traditional architecture, snack stalls, and a teahouse reached by a zigzag bridge.

⏱️ Time: 1.5-2 hours
🎫 Cost: ¥40 ($5.50)

632m Tall

Shanghai Tower

上海中心大厦

At 632 meters with 128 floors, this twisting tower is an engineering marvel. The observation deck on floor 118 offers the highest view in China. On a clear day, you can see 50km. The high-speed elevator (18 m/s) is an experience in itself.

Historic Quarter

Former French Concession

法租界 Fǎzūjiè

Tree-lined avenues, Art Deco apartments, hidden lane houses — this is Shanghai’s most charming neighborhood. Wukang Road and Fuxing Road are perfect for wandering. Boutique shops, craft coffee, rooftop bars, and the best nightlife in the city. Come evening, the bars on Julu Road and Yongkang Road come alive.

⏱️ Time: 2-4 hours
🎯 Highlights: Wukang Rd, Fuxing Rd

Arts & Shopping

Tianzifang

田子坊 Tiánzǐfāng

A maze of narrow alleyways in a former lane house neighborhood, now filled with galleries, design shops, craft studios, and quirky cafés. It’s touristy but genuinely charming — unlike the fake “old streets” elsewhere. Great for souvenirs that aren’t mass-produced.

⏱️ Time: 1-2 hours
🛍️ Best for: Unique souvenirs

World-Class Museum

Shanghai Museum

上海博物馆

One of China’s best museums, with 120,000 artifacts including ancient bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, and jade. The bronze collection is world-famous — some pieces date to 2000 BCE. Free admission, excellent English signage, and a great escape from summer heat or winter cold.
