Pandas: #1 reason to visit
๐ฐ
Daily Budget: $60-120
Why Chengdu?
If Beijing is China’s Washington and Shanghai its New York, Chengdu is the San Francisco โ laid-back, food-obsessed, and impossibly charming. This is the city where pandas nap in bamboo groves, where hotpot boils on every corner, and where teahouses have been the social network for centuries. For American travelers, Chengdu offers something rare: a Chinese city that doesn’t feel like work.
The pandas are the headline act โ the Chengdu Research Base has 80+ giant pandas, including adorable cubs in nursery windows. But stay for the food: Sichuan cuisine is one of the world’s great food traditions, and hotpot here is a social ritual. Add UNESCO-listed Mount Qingcheng, the 2000-year-old Dujiangyan irrigation system, and a nightlife scene that rivals Shanghai, and you’ve got China’s most livable city.
