Why Suzhou?
Suzhou has been China’s garden city for 1,000 years β where scholars built retreats of rockeries, pavilions, and reflecting pools. Today, nine classical gardens are UNESCO-listed, including the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lingering Garden. Add canals, silk workshops, and nearby water towns like Zhouzhuang, and you’ve got a perfect 1-2 day trip from Shanghai (30 min by high-speed rail).

This 16th-century garden is the largest and most famous of Suzhou’s classical gardens β 5 hectares of pavilions, bridges, and ponds centered on water. Every view is composed like a painting; the garden is designed for “borrowed scenery” from neighboring pagodas. Spring brings plum and cherry blossoms; summer, lotus.

Lingering Garden
ηε LiΓΊyuΓ‘n β Exquisite rockeries and corridors
Smaller than Humble Administrator’s but equally exquisite, Lingering Garden is famous for its rockeries (the “Crown of Clouds Peak” is 6.5m of eroded limestone) and covered corridors with lattice windows. Each window frames a different view. The garden changes character every few steps.

Pingjiang Road & Canals

This 800-year-old street along a canal is Suzhou’s most atmospheric β stone bridges, willow trees, traditional houses, and small shops. Take a boat ride (Β₯40) through the canals, browse the boutiques, or just wander. It’s touristy but still feels like old Suzhou.

Zhouzhuang Water Town
ε¨εΊ β China’s #1 water town
An hour from Suzhou, Zhouzhuang is the most famous of Jiangnan’s water towns β 900 years old, crisscrossed by canals, connected by stone bridges. The Twin Bridges are iconic (featured on a postage stamp). Take a gondola ride, visit the Shen Family Hall, stay overnight to see it lit up without crowds.
