Pandas: #1 reason to visit

๐Ÿ“…

Ideal Stay: 2-3 days

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Daily Budget: $60-120

Why Chengdu?

If Beijing is China’s Washington and Shanghai its New York, Chengdu is the San Francisco โ€” laid-back, food-obsessed, and impossibly charming. This is the city where pandas nap in bamboo groves, where hotpot boils on every corner, and where teahouses have been the social network for centuries. For American travelers, Chengdu offers something rare: a Chinese city that doesn’t feel like work.

The pandas are the headline act โ€” the Chengdu Research Base has 80+ giant pandas, including adorable cubs in nursery windows. But stay for the food: Sichuan cuisine is one of the world’s great food traditions, and hotpot here is a social ritual. Add UNESCO-listed Mount Qingcheng, the 2000-year-old Dujiangyan irrigation system, and a nightlife scene that rivals Shanghai, and you’ve got China’s most livable city.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System

้ƒฝๆฑŸๅ ฐ โ€” 256 BCE, still working

Built in 256 BCE, this is the world’s oldest functioning irrigation system โ€” and an engineering miracle. The ancient Chinese split the Min River without dams, using only the river’s own force. It’s still irrigating 5,300 kmยฒ today. Walk the suspension bridge over the rushing water, explore the temples, and understand why this is UNESCO-listed.
