China Now Offers Visa-Free Travel to 77 Countries

Updated May 3, 2026 ยท Source: National Immigration Administration

China just made things a whole lot easier for travelers. The country's new visa-free program now covers 77 countries, letting visitors stay for up to 30 days without a visa โ€” for tourism, business trips, or visiting family. It's the biggest visa shake-up China has ever done.

  • How long: Up to 30 days per visit
  • Who's in: UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Argentina โ€” 77 countries total
  • US travelers take note: Not on the list yet, but you can use the 240-hour transit waiver or the Hainan visa-free program
  • One catch: You can't extend the 30 days. If you want to stay longer, you'll need to leave and come back in

There's also the 240-hour (10-day) transit waiver โ€” expanded from the old 144-hour (6-day) limit. It now covers 60+ entry points across 24 provinces. For short trips and layovers, this is a game-changer.

7 Surprising Facts About Traveling in China

Updated May 2026

  • 1. China has the world's longest high-speed rail network โ€” 42,000+ km. You can get from Beijing to Shanghai (1,318 km) in 4.5 hours. That's NYC to Chicago in half the time.
  • 2. Hotels are required to register you with local police within 24 hours of check-in. You don't have to lift a finger โ€” they handle it automatically.
  • 3. Not every hotel can take foreign guests. Always double-check before you book. Big chains like Marriott, Hilton, and Shangri-La are always fine.
  • 4. Don't drink the tap water. But don't worry โ€” every hotel gives you free bottled water daily. Lots of it.
  • 5. China has 57 UNESCO World Heritage Sites โ€” second only to Italy. That's more than most people could see in a dozen trips.
  • 6. DiDi (China's Uber) is almost embarrassingly cheap. Most rides across town cost $3 to $8.
  • 7. Big hotels and chain stores take foreign credit cards. But for street food, taxis, and local shops, you'll want Alipay or WeChat Pay set up.
