City-by-City Sweet Spots
Beijing
Best: mid-September to late October. The Great Wall in mid-October is the single best sight-window in our three cities — autumn colors, 15-20°C hiking weather, blue skies. Spring (April) is the runner-up, with blossoms at the Summer Palace.
Shanghai
Best: April-May and October-November. Shanghai's humidity makes summer sticky and winter damp-cold; shoulder seasons are perfect for walking the Bund and French Concession.
Chongqing
Best: March-May and September-November. Chongqing is a famous "furnace city" in July-August (40°C possible) — but its night views, hotpot culture, and riverside fog make it a year-round destination if you plan around midday heat. Winter brings the dramatic misty-mountain look.

What is the best month to visit China?
October and April are the best months overall: mild weather across Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing, clear skies, and manageable crowds if you avoid the October 1-7 National Day holiday. September and May are strong runners-up. For the Great Wall specifically, mid-October offers autumn foliage with comfortable hiking temperatures.
When should tourists avoid visiting China?
Avoid two domestic holiday windows: Chinese New Year (late January to mid-February, dates vary) and National Day Golden Week (October 1-7). During these periods hundreds of millions of domestic trips occur — attractions hit capacity, hotels double their prices, and train tickets sell out. Labor Day (around May 1-5) is a smaller third peak worth sidestepping.
Is summer a bad time to visit China?
Summer (June-August) is hot and humid in most of China — Beijing reaches 35°C+, and Chongqing is one of China's famous "furnace cities". But summer is fine for travelers with school-calendar constraints: start sightseeing before 9am, shift to indoor museums midday, and US airfares often dip in late August.
