The 5 Scams That Actually Cost Importers Money
1. The Fake Factory
A middleman photographs a real factory (often rented for the day), lists the product below market price, and collects a deposit for an order the factory never sees. The factory exists โ the seller just doesn't work there.
How to spot it: the registered address on GSXT doesn't match the factory address, or a video call from the factory floor gets excuses. The fix: an on-site visit with photos of the production line and license records.
2. The Photo-Lifted Listing
Product photos stolen from a legitimate manufacturer, reposted by a shell company at a slightly better price. You order, you get nothing, or you get a box of something else.
How to spot it: reverse-image search the product photos; a listing that appears on three "different" companies is one seller. The fix: demand a video call showing the actual product and factory floor.
3. The Urgent Deposit
"The price expires Friday." "Another buyer is taking this batch." "We need 50% today to lock the materials." Urgency is the scammer's best friend โ it's the one thing real factories almost never rush.
How to spot it: any deadline pressure on a first order. The fix: real factories quote in writing and wait while you verify. A 30% deposit cap is standard; anything above that from a new supplier is a reason to slow down.
4. Switch-and-Bait Samples
A perfect sample arrives, you approve it, and the bulk order is made from cheaper materials. The sample was hand-picked; the batch wasn't.
How to spot it: compare the bulk shipment against the approved sample with a pre-shipment inspection. The fix: a third-party inspection before the balance payment catches this every time.
5. The Disappearing Middleman
You've been dealing with "Kevin" from Shenzhen for months. Then Kevin's WhatsApp goes quiet the week your deposit lands. The company was a one-man trading desk with no factory behind it.
How to spot it: no verifiable factory, no business license you can cross-check, and all communication through a personal number. The fix: a background check on the registered company before you scale the relationship.
The 10-Minute Verification Checklist
- 1. GSXT check. Get the Unified Social Credit Code and look it up on gsxt.gov.cn. Confirm the registration date, legal representative, and registered address.
- 2. Address match. Google the registered address and the factory address. Do they match? Does the factory address actually exist (not a residential building)?
- 3. Scam search. Search the company name plus "scam", "fraud", or "complaint". Also check the supplier's own name on Reddit and importer forums.
- 4. Video call from the floor. A real factory can walk you through the production line in 30 seconds. Excuses are a red flag.
- 5. Sample first. Order a sample and compare it against the listing photos. Test it like you'll sell it.
- 6. Payment terms. Never pay 100% upfront. 30% deposit maximum for a first order, balance against inspection or shipping documents.

FAQ
Is Alibaba Trade Assurance enough protection? It helps, but scammers work around it with new accounts and off-platform payment requests. Verify the company, not just the platform badge.
How much should a factory verification cost? Remote license checks run $99 per request. On-site visits run $239 per day โ less than the flight you'd otherwise book.
What if I already sent a deposit? Move fast: request the business license and GSXT code, ask for a video call from the floor, and if anything is off, start the dispute process with your payment provider immediately.
