New to China? Start with our first-timer tips for China travel, and if you're still deciding between cities, our which-China-city guide compares Chengdu with Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing. This page assumes you've picked Chengdu and now just need the plan.
β Day 1: Where Do You See the Pandas Without the Crowds?
At the gate before 7:30 AM, ticket already booked. The official March-to-October entry windows are 7:30-12:00 for morning tickets and 12:00-17:00 for afternoon tickets, and the morning slot is the only one that matters. Pandas eat first, then nap. You want to be at the nursery while they're awake.
Pandas, Tea, and Hotpot
Morning β Evening
Every Chengdu local will tell you the same thing about the pandas: they eat first, then they sleep. If you're not at the gate by 7:30, you're watching the afternoon nap version. The whole city runs on that rule.
β Day 2: Is Dujiangyan Worth the Trip from Chengdu?
Yes. It's a 2,200-year-old irrigation system that still does its job, which makes it the rare "ancient wonder" that's actually functional. The train from Chengdu takes about half an hour, the ticket costs roughly Β₯10, and the site itself runs Β₯80 in peak season (April 1 to November 15). Worth a full day, no question.

Morning β Evening
Chengdu people are genuinely proud of this one. It's not a museum piece, it's the reason their city exists. Ask anyone on the train home and they'll tell you to walk the inner river side first, before the tour groups reach the suspension bridge.
β Day 3: What's the Slowest, Best Day in Chengdu?
A morning at Wenshu Monastery, an afternoon in Jinli, and nothing on the schedule you can't skip. Chengdu rewards the unplanned day. Day 3 is the one you'll actually tell people about.
Monks, Lanterns, and One Last Hotpot
Morning β Evening
Ask a Chengdu local what they do on a free morning and the answer is always the same: tea, dumplings, and nowhere to be. That's not laziness, that's the city's whole personality. You'll understand by day three.

β FAQ: Chengdu in 3 Days, Answered
What time should I get to the panda base?
Before 7:30 AM in the March-October season. Morning-slot entry runs 7:30-12:00, and the pandas are most active right at opening. Book the morning slot online before you arrive.
How spicy is Sichuan hotpot, really?
You control it. Split pot (yuanyang) gives you a mild half and a numbing-spicy half. Start mild, work up, and dip everything in the sesame-oil bowl instead of eating the soup. The oil cools the spice and keeps the flavor.
Is 3 days enough for Chengdu?
For a first trip, yes. Pandas, teahouses, hotpot, and Dujiangyan all fit. Add a fourth day for a Leshan Giant Buddha day trip or a cooking class. Not sure Chengdu is your city? Our city comparison guide helps you decide.
Do I need to book panda base tickets in advance?
Yes. Online real-name reservations only, bookable up to 14 days ahead, capped at 85,000 visitors a day. Morning slots go first, so book before you fly.
Which airport should I fly into: Tianfu or Shuangliu?
International flights mostly use Tianfu (TFU). Metro Line 18 gets you from South Railway Station to the airport in about 37 minutes for Β₯10. Shuangliu (CTU) handles many domestic routes and sits on Metro Line 10.
Do I need Alipay or WeChat Pay in Chengdu?
Yes, most places run cashless, including metro machines and teahouses. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly, and read our essential China apps guide so nothing surprises you at the gate.
