Short answer: Go to Mutianyu โ€” restored walls, cable car and toboggan, and far fewer crowds than Badaling. Tickets are roughly 35-45 RMB ($5-6), cable car about 100-140 RMB round trip, and the drive from central Beijing takes about 1.5 hours. Leave by 8am, avoid weekends and holidays. Skip the tour-bus trap: some 'Great Wall tours' take you to a small commercial section with shopping stops built in. Mutianyu and Badaling are the real deal. Jiankou (the dramatic unrestored wall) is not open to tourists โ€” tours offering it are operating outside the rules.

Costs (2026)

Getting There

Badaling (fastest access)

Direct high-speed rail from Beijing North Station โ€” about 30 minutes on the train, then a short shuttle to the entrance. Bus 877 from Deshengmen also runs there (about 1.5 hours).

Mutianyu (best experience)

No direct train. Options: the tourist shuttle bus from Dongzhimen, a private driver (most convenient โ€” they wait while you're on the wall), or a group tour. For most visitors, a private car is worth the extra cost.

When to Go

What we do for our travelers: private car with an English address card, tickets booked in advance, a Mutianyu route that hits the best watchtowers and the toboggan on the way down, plus a hutong lunch spot on the return. Get the full Beijing plan โ†’

FAQ

Is the Great Wall worth it? It's the single most iconic sight in China โ€” yes. But manage expectations: you're visiting a heavily restored section, not the wild wall of movies.

How long do I need on the wall? 2-3 hours is right for most people; hikers can spend 4-5 hours between watchtowers.

Is it accessible? Mutianyu has a cable car for the climb and wheelchair-friendly paths at the top on the main route โ€” far easier than Badaling's steep stairs.
