How Long Is the Great Wall, Really?

You hear "thousands of miles" in every documentary, but the real number comes from a national survey, not a tour script. In 2012, China's State Administration of Cultural Heritage wrapped up a multi-year field survey and put the total length of every Great Wall branch, section and relic at 21,196.18 kilometers (13,170.7 miles). That count includes every dynasty's walls, and most of it is now rubble, buried earth or collapsed towers. The famous Ming-era wall alone measures 8,850 kilometers, which is the part visitors actually walk on. The Great Wall has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 (site reference 438), listed the same year as the Forbidden City. Badaling vs Mutianyu vs Jinshanling: The Numbers, Side by Side

Three sections get the vast majority of visitors, and they are not interchangeable. Prices below are the adult rates listed on each section's official booking channel.

Yes, and the rule is real-name booking, not a casual "buy at the gate." Both Mutianyu and Badaling run online real-name reservation systems. Mutianyu's official site opens reservations 15 days ahead, and you check in at the entrance with the same passport you booked with. Badaling does the same and caps the day at 65,000 visitors, a number that fills on clear weekends in May before lunch. On a public holiday, walking up without a booking at either section is a gamble you do not need to take.

Summer adds one bonus option. Mutianyu brought back night tours in 2025, with peak-season hours stretching to 21:00, per the Beijing municipal government's English site (english.beijing.gov.cn). Night tickets are a separate, limited allotment and they need the same real-name booking. Rule of thumb for a Beijing trip: if the Forbidden City and the Great Wall are both on your list, book both the moment your dates are fixed. What's the Best Month to Visit the Great Wall?

April and May are the sweet spot. June gets warm but weekday mornings still work. July and August bring the heat plus afternoon thunderstorms; go before 9am or after 3pm and carry more water than you think you need.

September and October are the other peak: clear skies, lower humidity, and October's foliage is the most photogenic backdrop of the year. One catch: National Day week (October 1-7) turns Badaling into a queue, so push your wall day to late September or after October 8. November through March is the quiet season, ticket prices drop to the off-season rate (35 RMB at Badaling), and occasional snow turns the wall into a scene you will not see in any tour brochure. Dress in layers; the wall sits at altitude and the wind bites, especially at Jinshanling's exposed stretches.

From Beijing, What's the Real Transport Math?

Badaling is the fastest on paper. High-speed rail from Qinghe Station takes about 20 minutes (roughly 30 from Beijing North Station), second-class tickets around 20 RMB, then a short shuttle to the entrance, per Travel China Guide's rail notes. The catch is that everyone knows it, so the trains and the gate queues are thickest there. Bus 877 from Deshengmen is the cheap fallback at about 1.5 hours, but it fights the same city traffic on the way out.

Mutianyu has no direct train. A 9am departure turns a 1.5-hour drive into a two-hour one before you even reach the gate, and you lose the morning light that makes the wall worth photographing.
