Side-by-side: what each one actually covers
| Alibaba Trade Assurance | Sourcing agent (independent) | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Marketplace payment protection + dispute/refund process | Human service: verify, negotiate, audit, inspect, coordinate |
| Supplier scope | Only participating suppliers, only on-Alibaba orders | Any supplier: Alibaba, 1688, factory direct, trade fair |
| When it protects | After a breach: claim for refund if shipment/quality misses contract | Before payment: catch problems so the breach never happens |
| Factory verification | Alibaba’s own supplier checks; no independent audit by default | On-site audit: premises, line, licenses, capacity, photos/video |
| Pre-shipment inspection | Optional add-on, not default | Core service: quantity/quality/packaging checked before your balance payment |
| Negotiation (price/MOQ/terms) | You negotiate yourself in-chat | Agent negotiates in Chinese, on your specs |
| Cost | Free, but priced into the supplier’s quote | Flat fee (ours: $129 remote per request, $239 on-site per day), no commission |
What Trade Assurance is good at (and where it stops)
- Good: a refund path if a participating supplier misses the contracted ship date or quality on an on-platform order; keeps payment inside Alibaba’s rails.
- Stops at the platform edge: the moment a supplier asks you to pay off-Alibaba (wire to a bank, personal account), Trade Assurance no longer applies — this is a common scam pivot.
- Not verification: it does not independently confirm the factory is real or that goods match spec before you pay the balance; a claim after the fact is slower and weaker than an inspection before payment.
What a sourcing agent adds
- Verification first: GSXT company check, license/bank-name match, real-premises visit — see factory verification.
- Inspection before balance: pre-shipment inspection so the 70% balance is only released against conforming goods.
- Off-platform reach: 1688 and factory-direct suppliers are often cheaper than Alibaba retail — an agent can buy and verify there (see 1688 price check).
- Negotiation & logistics: MOQ, price, specs, consolidation and freight coordination in Chinese, on your behalf.
When each one wins
- Trade Assurance alone: standard, non-custom product; participating supplier; small-to-medium order; you can judge quality from specs and photos.
- Agent (with or without Trade Assurance): custom/OEM goods; off-platform supplier; you need a factory audit or pre-shipment inspection; MOQ/price negotiation; consolidation; or you simply can’t verify from abroad.
- Both: use the agent to verify + inspect, and keep the order inside Trade Assurance for the payment-dispute backstop. Belt and braces.
Cost reality check
Trade Assurance is “free” but its cost is embedded in the supplier’s on-platform price. An agent is a visible flat fee — ours is $129 per remote request (verification, price check, research; English report in 2 business days) or $239 per on-site day (factory audit, inspection, same-day evidence), with no percentage of your order. For a single avoided bad container, the fee is rounding error. See sourcing agent costs.
Red flags on either path
- Supplier pressures you to leave Alibaba’s payment rails “to save fees” — you lose Trade Assurance and gain nothing.
- An “agent” who takes a commission on your order value instead of a flat fee — incentives misaligned (we charge flat, see what we won’t do).
- No willingness to allow an independent inspection before the balance payment.
- Prices far below market — benchmark first (supplier scams guide).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Trade Assurance replace a sourcing agent?
No. Trade Assurance is a refund backstop for on-platform orders; it does not verify the factory or inspect goods before your balance payment. An agent prevents the problem; Trade Assurance compensates after it. For custom goods or off-platform suppliers you need the agent.
Can I use a sourcing agent for an Alibaba order?
Yes. The agent can verify the supplier, negotiate terms, and run a pre-shipment inspection even when the order and payment stay inside Alibaba, so you keep Trade Assurance and add independent checks.
Is 1688 cheaper than Alibaba, and is it safe?
1688 is usually cheaper because it is the domestic wholesale market, but it is Chinese-language and has no Trade Assurance-style backstop for foreign buyers. That is exactly where an agent adds value: buy and verify on 1688 on your behalf. See the 1688 vs Alibaba comparison.
What does an agent cost versus the risk?
Our fees are flat: $129 per remote request, $239 per on-site day, no commission. Compared with a failed batch or a seized deposit, verification and inspection are the cheapest line item in the order.
