Why factories set an MOQ at all
- Production runs have fixed setup costs (molds, printing, line changeover); small runs lose money.
- Raw materials are bought in bulk tiers; your small order still forces a full material lot.
- MOQ filters tire-kickers from serious buyers — it is as much a signal as a constraint.
Six levers that lower MOQ
| Lever | How it lowers MOQ | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Consolidate variants | Fewer colors/sizes = one longer run | Less product variety at launch |
| Standard specs/colors | Uses existing materials, no custom lot | Less differentiation |
| Sample-then-scale | Paid sample order now, committed volume later | Higher unit price on the sample batch |
| Off-season timing | Idle lines accept small runs to stay busy | You must plan around their calendar |
| Stock lots | Buy existing overstock at low MOQ | Limited designs/quantities available |
| Faster deposit | Cash flow certainty buys flexibility | Your capital committed earlier |
When MOQ genuinely won’t move
- Fully custom molds/tooling: the tooling cost must be amortized, so MOQ follows the mold.
- Regulated or certified goods where a full test batch is required.
- Hot-selling lines at capacity — the factory has no incentive to shrink orders.
In those cases the answer is not more negotiation but a different supplier or a 1688 stock-source check, where domestic wholesalers sell smaller quantities.
Where a local negotiator helps
MOQ talks are relationship and language games. A China-based agent negotiates face-to-face or in fluent Chinese, reads whether the MOQ is real or a bluff, and can verify the factory (factory verification) so you know if “MOQ 1000” is a production fact or a filter. Remote negotiation support is $129 per request; an on-site sourcing day is $239. See sourcing agent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is MOQ always negotiable?
Often, but not always. It moves when the factory has idle capacity or your order fits an existing run; it rarely moves when custom tooling or certification forces a full batch.
What is a reasonable first counter-offer?
Ask for 30-50% of the stated MOQ tied to one of the levers (standard colors, sample-then-scale, faster deposit). Anchoring at zero credibility hurts; anchoring with a concrete trade-off works.
Can an agent really get a lower MOQ?
Frequently yes, because they negotiate in Chinese, in person or by phone, and can bundle your order with verified capacity. They also confirm whether the MOQ claim is genuine before you spend weeks negotiating.
